On the 31st of March, the NOVA BHRE will take part in an event organized by BNP Paribas and Rock in Rio on Diversity. Dussu Djabula’s intervention will focus on gender equality, racial equity and its repercussions on Human Rights.
On the 10th of March, the NOVA BHRE took part in an event organized by PwC on Gender Microaggressions. Dussu Djabula’s intervention focused on the evolution of the concept of microaggressions and the role of bystanders.
On the 27th of January, the NOVA BHRE took part in the module on “Derechos Humanos y Globalización” coordinated by Daniel Schönfelder as Claire Bright delivered a session on “El estudio para la Comisión Europea sobre los requisitos de debida diligencia a través de las cadenas de suministro”.

On the 10th of December the NOVA BHRE participated in a conference entitled ‘Dever de diligência das empresas e responsabilidade empresarial’ [Due Diligence and Corporate Responsibility] organised by the University of Coimbra where Claire Bright delivered a presentation entitled: ‘Corporate Due Diligence: history of the project and its future prospects’.
On the 7th of December, the NOVA BHRE participated in the expert discussion on EU legislation on deforestation: Supply-side measures creating incentives for forest preservation convened by Fern & the GIZ.
On the 7th of December, the NOVA BHRE participated in the webinar organised by the NOVA Green lab and the University of Aberdeen on the Energy Transition as Claire Bright delivered a presentation on The role of Risk-Based Due Diligence in relation to the Energy Transition. On the 19th of November, the NOVA BHRE participated in the panel on Business and Human Rights in Europe in the framework of the Jean Monnet Chair FECAP International Conference which analysed the regulatory and case-law developments in Europe, and their implications for and transportability to Brazil. On the 18th of November, the NOVA BHRE participated in the conference ‘Les opportunités et les défis pour une convention internationale sur les entreprises et les droits de l’homme’ [Opportunities and challenges for an international Treaty on business and human rights], organised by the Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas and the Instituto de Derechos Humanos y Empresas, Universidad de Monterray, in the panel on human rights due diligence with François Gave, Kathia Martin-Chenut, Robert McCorquodale, Stéphne Brabant and Claire Bright to discuss the Interaction between the Draft EU Directive on Mandatory Due Diligence and the Treaty Project.
On the 18th of November 2021,the NOVA BHRE participated in the Daimler Sustainability Dialogue as Claire Bright delivered the Keynote Speech on the Regulatory developments on Human Rights Due Diligence, and took par in a discussion session on Human Rights and the Environment.
The NOVA took part in the FAROL startup acceleration program to fight modern slavery with an intervention on The Prevention of Forced Labour within Supply Chains on the 4 November 2021.
The NOVA BHRE participated in the E-course “Compliance para a prevenção da corrupção” on 29 October organised by the NOVA Compliance Lab and Jurisnova. On the 7th of October, the NOVA BHRE participated in the conference organised by the Università Degli Studi di Milano entitled ‘Doveri Intergenerazionali e tutelage dell’ambiente’ [Intergenerational Duties and Environmental Protection] as Claire Bright and Chiara Macchi delivered a joint presentation on ‘Mandatory human rights due diligence: recenti sviluppi legislative in Europa’ [Mandatory human rights due diligence: recent legislative developments in Europe’].
On the 5th of October, the NOVA BHRE took part in the VI UN Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights for Latin America and the Carribean as Claire Bright gave a presentation on ‘Los modelos normativos sobre debida diligencia en derechos humanos en Europa’ [The normative models on human rights due diligence in Europe].
On the 29th of September 2021, the NOVA BHRE participated in the conference on the Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods in the context of maritime transport, as Claire Bright gave a presentation on the role that the Vienna Convention could play in upholding human rights standards in international commercial transactions concerning the maritime sector. The NOVA BHRE was delighted to participate in the Third International Summer School – Human Rights Law in Context, Special Focus: Business and Human Rights – of the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg and the ECCHR with a course on the International and European Developments in Business and Human Rights delivered by Claire Bright on the 14th of September 2021.

On the 24th June Laura Íñigo Álvarez participated as a speaker on the panel on Vulnerabilities and Business and Human Rights at the Annual Toogdag convened by the NNHRR Business and Human Rights Working Group and hosted by the VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. On the 29th of June, the NOVA BHRE participated in the online forum of the 4th edition of the Business and Human Rights Summer School in which Heidi Hautala (European Parliament & Chair of the EP Responsible Business Conduct Working Group) and Claire Bright discussed the EU Proposal on mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence.
On the 28th of June, the NOVA BHRE took part in the 5th ICC European Conference on International Arbitration today in the panel discussion on Business and Human Rights Arbitration which featured Alexander Marcopoulos, Ursula Kriebaum and Claire Bright, chaired by Marney Cheek.
On the 7th of June 2021, the NOVA BHRE participated in the webinar ‘Regulatory Change and Multinational Enterprises’ organised the Academy of International Business. The panel composed of Louise Curran, Elke Schüßler and Claire Bright discussed the evolutions in due diligence requirements in global supply chains.
On the 4th of June 2021 Laura Íñigo Álvarez participated as a guest speaker on the webinar session “Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights and expected outcomes” organized by the USP-Business and Human Rights Working Group coordinated by Prof. Eduardo Saad-Diniz.
As part of the short e-course on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, Claire Bright delivered a session on Gender Equality in Business and Human Rights which took place on the 25th of May.
On the 25th of May 2021, the NOVA BHRE participated in a webinar organised by Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) discussing the EU-level developments in relation to mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence and its implications for companies. The panellists included Marissa Saretsky (Director of Corporate Sustainability at Pandora), Laurent Lhopitallier, (Head of Healthy Planet and Vigilance Plan and Sanofi) and Claire Bright.
On the 21st of May 2021, the NOVA BHRE participated in the webinar on “The challenges of public procurement and the circular economy – sustainability criteria in public procurement” organised by Vera Eiró with Tiago de Melo Cartaxo, and the Secretary of State for the Environment, Inês dos Santos Costa, as Claire Bright talked about public procurement and human rights due diligence in the supply chain.

On the 11th of May, the NOVA BHRE participated in a webinar organised by the Cocoa Coalition, in which Shahmeem Purdasy (Senior Executive and General Counsel with Plenitude Consulting) and Claire Bright discussed the provisions on corporate liability in the European Parliament Resolution of the 10th of March with recommendations to the Commission on Corporate due diligence and corporate accountability.
On the 19th of May 2021, Claire Marzo presented her paper on Platform workers and the due diligence duty in the new French Law proposal in the framework of the SPEED webinar series. The paper was discussed by Claire Bright and Barbara Palli.
On the 28th of April 2021 The NOVA BHRE took part in the webinar on The Role of the private sector in the transition to a green, fair, and sustainable economy, organised by the Plataforma Portuguesa. The Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Francisco André, and the Vice-President of the European Investment Bank, Ricardo Mourinho Félix delivered the opening remarks, followed by a debate moderated by Claire Bright with a distinguished panel of experts including Maria Shaw Barragan, from the European Investment Bank, Batchi Baldeh, from the African Development Bank, Elina Mikola, from the Finnish Development NGOs, Erika Mendes from Justiça Ambiental / Friends of the Earth Mozambique and Erinch Sahan from the World Fair Trade Organization.
On the 21st and 22nd of April 2021, on the occasion of Earth Day 2021, the NOVA Consumer lab organised, in partnership with the NOVA Centre on Business, Human Rights and the Environment, a conference on Sustainability & Consumption in which the EU Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders and the Portuguese Secretary of State for Trade, Services and Consumers Protection, João Torres, gave the welcome address. The online conference gathered nearly 50 panellists. Claire Bright gave an overview of the current legislative landscape concerning Sustainable Supply Chains in the panel on “Consumer Law and Sustainability”.
On the 30th of March, in the framework of the course on Law and Cinema coordinated by Francisco Pereira Coutinho and Nova School of Law with the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual, we screened the #bizhumanrights documentary film Under Rich Earth by Malcolm Rogge which was introduced by Claire Bright followed by a live Q&A session with the film director.
On the 26th of March 2021, the NOVA BHRE participated in the Roundtable organised by the Global Forum on Law, Justice and Development (GFLJD) of the World Bank as Claire Bright delivered a presentation entitled ‘Figures du Devoir de Vigilance: Perspectives Nationales’ [Types of the Duty of Vigilance: National Perspectives].
On the 24th of March 2021, the NOVA BHRE participated in the ‘Tercer Coloquio sobre Responsibilidad Empresarial y Derechos Humanos‘ [Third Colloquium on Responsible Business and Human Rights] in which Claire Bright joined the panel on ‘debida diligence en derechos humans como una nueva frontera?’ with Danielle Pamplona, Alejandra Ancheita, Martha Herrera, Germán Zamara, chaired by Humberto Cantú Rivera.

On the 17th of March 2021, in the framework of the ‘SPEED’ webinar series organised by Nova School of Law, Laura Íñigo Álvarez presented her current research about the effectiveness of non-judicial remedies for business-related human rights abuses: the case of National Contact Points at the OECD. The commentator of this session was Nicolas Hachez, Acting Manager for NCP Coordination, OECD Centre for Responsible Business Conduct.
On the 12th of March 2021, the NOVA BHRE was delighted to participate in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Teaching BHR Forum at the webinar entitled ‘From the UNPGs to mHRDD‘ in which John Ruggie, Christopher Patz and Claire Bright discussed the legislative developments on mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence at the EU level.

The Nova Centre on Business, Human Rights and the Environment was delighted to participate in the 55th Symposium of the German Association for Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Logistics (BME) on 10 November 2020, in which Claire Bright gave the keynote speech on the current regulations in Europe concerning sustainability in supply chains.
The UN Business and Human Rights Treaty: Between Utopia and Reality? On the 9th of November 2020 at 3pm CET Claire Bright, Jelena Aparac, Surya Deva, Jernej Letnar Černič and Gorazd Justinek discussed the Second Revised Draft of the binding treaty in an Academic Forum organised by the New University. The virtual conference “From Human Rights Principles to Politics” organized by NOVA School of Law took place on the 15th of October 2020. The second panel, dedicated to Business and Human Rights, explored the Politicisation of Human Rights in the Corporate World and was chaired by Claire Bright.
On the 22nd of September 2020, NOVA University hosted the 3rd edition of the NOVA Science day dedicated to Sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Claire Bright talked about the Role of Law in Fostering Responsible Business Conduct. Her presentation is available here.
